For America
In this Autumn 2016,
I will stay in 2 artist residencies in the US.
This is the text to prepare myself to this opportunity.
You’ve long been on the open road
you’ve been sleepin’ in the rain.
From dirty words and muddy cells
your clothes are soiled and stained.
But the dirty words and mud of cells
will soon be judged insane.
So only stop and rest yourself and you’ll be off again.
-“Thirsty boots” Eric Andersen 1966
This was the song written in the era of civil rights movement and protestation for Vietnam War in 1960’s in America. I first heard this song in Japanese translation in the end of 1970’s, far later from original’s release. However something tangibly encouraging in this song hit me and I found another aspect of American culture, it’s somehow inflected but positive. I also liked pop tunes played in the hilarious spree sustained by the American success of mass production and mass consumption, Beach boys, Supremes, Ronetts, and so on. They had no stain, pristine, simple and happy. But at that time, for me, introversive teenager who sense and think a little too much, so called protest songs like this were more fit. “Eve of Destruction”, “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy” and others. I mainly listened Japanese translated version of these songs.
But the time was already 70’s. As Eagles sung they hadn’t hat that spirits there since 1969, new singers started to represent the mundaneness after the climax of the movement was gone.
And time went by.
In the era of the millennials, now is the time of the conflict between have and doesn’t have, top and bottom, 1% and 99%, not right and left. The fissure between us is significant. In 2011 people occupied Wall Street. Rye Cooder made it a song. People start protesting this time against this disparity with new awareness. Grass roots protestation, traditional American political movement comes again. I see Burnie Sanders was the icon who represents this context in this presidential race. But he was out. Now Trump is trying to exploit this fissure with very dangerous way. Who can tell the aftermath but sometimes anger makes us blind.
